A casual conversation with a group of yeshivishe bochurim opened Yisroel Ginzburg’s eyes to a phenomenon that’s taking the Litvish yeshiva world by storm — wearing P’sil Techeiles in their tzitzis. Intrigued by what he heard, he set out to investigate just how widespread this trend is, who’s driving it, and who feels they can’t join in. (Olam HaYeshivos)

Sometimes, we mess up in ways that open our eyes to things we never would have figured out on our own. That’s exactly what happened to me when I was sitting at the wedding of a close friend. I ended up at a table with a group of yeshivishe bochurim, and we started talking about the yeshiva world. One of them mentioned a certain rav who had recently joined a particular yeshiva. I casually remarked, “He’s not exactly the usual type.” Then, almost without thinking, I added, “You know, he’s the kind of guy who wears techeiles in his tzitzis.”
“Yes, I wear techeiles,” he told me, “but I’m really not an exception. This phenomenon is gaining serious momentum in the Litvish yeshiva world. Every bochur who starts wearing techeiles influences a few others around him to make the switch as well. In recent years, it’s become very ‘in,’ and in every yeshiva, there’s a noticeable percentage — not just of bochurim wearing techeiles, but also of rabbeim. Some wear it openly, while others keep it more private, but the attitude toward techeiles today is completely different from what it was in your time or even a few decades ago.”
I was honestly shocked. Not only because I never imagined this would become a thing in the Litvish yeshiva world, but also because of the fact that these bochurim were willing to go against the norms of their parents. They’re adopting halachic practices their parents don’t follow, which to me shows integrity, backbone, and the courage to act, even when it’s unconventional.
I decided to dig deeper. I wanted to know if there was some organization or figure actively driving this shift in the yeshiva world. I was curious whether these bochurim who switch to wearing techeiles receive support from their parents or face pushback for breaking with established family minhagim.
• • •
It turns out there is someone actively pushing this initiative forward. Several bochurim directed me to Yosef Eli Steinberg, the chairman of the organization U’Zchartem, which works extensively to bring techeiles into the Charedi world. He shared with me in detail about the dramatic shift taking place in yeshivos regarding this mitzvah.
Recently, I met a classic yeshiva bochur from a typical Litvish yeshiva who had started wearing techeiles. I asked him if this is a trend that’s gaining traction in the yeshiva world.
“I can clearly see a growth of hundreds of percent in the number of yeshiva bochurim wearing techeiles,” he told me. “What used to be a fear of standing out or being different is, in many cases, no longer an issue. Fear like that shouldn’t outweigh fulfilling a mitzvah d’Oraisa. And in places where that fear still exists, we need to work to overcome it.
“Many bochurim have shared with me their concern that wearing techeiles could harm their shidduch prospects. But Hashem has shown many of them that sometimes, because of the techeiles, they ended up with a shidduch far better than they expected. When you see a bochur wearing techeiles, it’s clear that he cares deeply about fulfilling mitzvos, and that’s something many parents actually appreciate.”

Isn’t there a concern that you’re encouraging bochurim to act against the wishes of their parents and rabbonim? I’ve always heard that Rav Elyashiv zt”l was against techeiles. Aren’t you worried about that?
“I’m not aware of any rav who says it’s outright forbidden to wear techeiles,” he responded. “On the other hand, I know rabbonim who say it’s practically a chiyuv. There are some who advise avoiding it for hashkafic reasons, which aren’t necessarily tied to whether or not they believe it’s legitimate. But nowadays, it’s clear — there’s hardly any yeshiva that would throw out a bochur for wearing techeiles, unlike five years ago when very few yeshivos allowed it to be worn openly.
“On the contrary, I personally brought techeiles tzitzis to five Litvish roshei yeshiva — whose names I can’t disclose — and today, it’s almost unheard of for a yeshiva to not have at least one of its rabbeim wearing techeiles. And I can say with certainty that there isn’t a single gadol b’dor who doesn’t have grandchildren wearing it.
“Even the Rishon L’Tzion, Rav Yitzchak Yosef, who has publicly stated several times that there’s no need to wear techeiles, wrote in Shu”t HaRishon L’Tzion (Siman 1) that there is room to be mehader and wear it on a tallis katan discreetly.”
But at the end of the day, isn’t this a phenomenon where bochurim are acting against the guidance of their rabbonim? Isn’t that problematic?
“In yeshivos where the rabbonim strongly oppose it, like Kaplan or Or Yisroel, it’s true that there’s almost no techeiles. But in the majority of yeshivos, the situation is entirely different. In 90% of yeshivos, there are at least a few bochurim wearing it openly.
“I even heard from a prominent rosh yeshiva why he finds this trend of bochurim wearing techeiles encouraging. He explained that the Gemara in Menachos says, ‘See this mitzvah (techeiles) and remember another mitzvah — which is this? Krias Shema.’ And as is well-known, the state of reciting Krias Shema on time is an area where many yeshiva bochurim struggle. Here, the Gemara itself gives an answer — wearing techeiles can serve as a reminder and strengthen their commitment to Krias Shema.”

And the parents of these bochurim — don’t they object to their sons acting differently from how they were raised?
“It’s so scary to be a parent today. You never know where your child might end up. I always tell parents who talk to me about this: I wish for them that their sons’ biggest act of rebellion would be to embrace mitzvah observance in such an extraordinary way.
“That being said, I do sometimes meet bochurim who don’t wear techeiles because their parents strongly oppose it and won’t accept it. These bochurim submit to their parents’ wishes, understanding that it’s Hashem’s will to honor their parents, even though they have a strong desire to fulfill this precious mitzvah. But even in cases like this, the situation is incomparable to what it was 10 years ago, or even less.
“In any case, I have a firm rule that bochurim in mesivta can only get techeiles from me if their father explicitly approves. For example, about four years ago, in a major yeshiva ketana in Yerushalayim, around 15 bochurim started wearing techeiles, all after receiving permission from their parents.”
How do you explain the fact that rabbonim aren’t instructing everyone to wear techeiles?
“First of all, there’s a very long list of Litvish rabbonim who wear techeiles privately. Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten their permission to publicize their names, but it’s worth remembering that even among rabbonim who don’t wear it themselves, there are many who tell those who ask that it’s perfectly fine to wear it — and, in some cases, they even encourage it, albeit subtly.
“I once asked a rav from Telz Stone — a maggid shiur in a successful yeshiva — if he wasn’t concerned about having tzitzis more mehudar than the Chazon Ish. He replied, ‘If someone brought us the nicest pair of tefillin from 100 years ago, we would likely reject them outright. The same goes for arba minim or countless other mitzvos where Hashem has opened up new opportunities to fulfill them with greater hiddur than in previous generations. So why would we say it’s impossible when it comes to tzitzis?’”
Do you think that in the future everyone will wear techeiles?
“There’s a massive number of bochurim and avreichim who are ‘sitting on the fence.’ Meaning, they know techeiles is authentic, and they’re aware that many rabbonim wear it. But they lack the courage to take the plunge and are waiting to see how things develop.
“I suggest anyone who doubts this should go to the coffee room in a kollel or yeshiva and ask whether they believe this techeiles is the real one mentioned in the Torah. You’ll be amazed at how many people say they believe in it but…”
• • •
He continues by showing me photos of Gedolei Yisroel who wore techeiles (though due to copyright complexities, these images cannot yet be shared publicly). Among the photos, he points out Rav Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg zt”l wearing tzitzis with techeiles — contrary to claims that he never wore it, despite his exceptional care with the mitzvah of tzitzis. He also shares a statement from Maran Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l, who told someone who asked, “If you hold that you know [this is the authentic techeiles], then it’s obvious that you are halachically obligated to wear it.”
Additionally, he shows me a picture of Rav Sraya Deblitzky wearing techeiles, along with a long list of other Torah giants who wore it. These include Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg zt”l, and among the living, Rav Natan Rotman, Rav Yisrael Landau, Rav Chaim Kloft, Rav Itche Meir Morgenstern, and Rav Karp — all of whom investigated the matter and transitioned to wearing tzitzis with a thread of techeiles.
Further inquiries revealed that Rav Moshe Shaul Klein and Rav Moshe Sternbuch also wear techeiles, as well as Rav Dov Kook of Tiberias, Rav Yitzchak Ratzabi, and others.
