I am pleased to write on behalf of Mr. Rafael (Rafi) Hecht, whom I have known for the past eight years. Over this time, Rafi has contributed meaningfully to projects related to Tekhelet and tzitzis:

• He rebuilt our WordPress websites and developed a well-structured library web application with a solid back end.

• He built and curates Porphyrology.com, a site dedicated to Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Herzog’s doctoral work on Tekhelet.

• He assisted Ptil Tekhelet with social media efforts.

• He has demonstrated both serious Torah knowledge in the sugyos of Techeiles and competence in tying, having identified and organized over fifty tying variants (a project I was happy to assist).

• He also worked—with my involvement—to document over one hundred fifty notable Rabbanim who wear Techeiles. Rafi’s combination of learning, careful research, and practical skills have been consistently evident. I can recommend his tying services and his web development work without reservations.

To the Hebrew Porphyrology Online Project team,

It has been over a century since my late grandfather, Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Isaac Halevy Herzog zt”l, wrote his ground-breaking doctorate, Hebrew Porphyrology, for the University of London. It is gratifying and meaningful to see that his work is not only still relevant but sought after as a fundamental source for Tekhelet research. The ideas he developed are crucially important as they relate to the ancient Biblical dye. The doctorate also provides a model for synthesis of so many diverse disciplines, old and new, Halachic and secular studies, of Torah and science.

The project of putting Hebrew Porphyrology online is to be highly commended in making the work available to a wide audience worldwide. The translations of the non-English sections, as well as the full Hebrew translation, will allow it to be accessible for so many
who otherwise would not be able to read it.

I wish to thank Ptil Tekhelet for spearheading this project, the overall curator, Rafi Hecht, the project manager of translations, Gilad Sterman, and all those who gave of their time to contribute to this important project: Abraham Cohen, Daniel Sanders, David Yosef Aguirre, Meir Smullen, Menachem Davis, Michael Kaplan, and Yosef Malkiel.
