תכל [האפפען] ויבטחו בך תרגומו ויתכלון בסברותך ישכון לבטח תרגומו ישרי בתכיל (א”ב יסתכלון כתוב וישרו לרוחצן):
תכלת [פארפער וואלל]
- (ברכות יח) הוה קא גררא תכילתיה דרבי יונתן עילוי קברי
- (יבמות ד) תכלת עמרא הוא וממאי דתכלת עמרא הוא מדשש כיתנא תכלת עמרא
- (ברכות ה) תנא בין תכלת שבה ללבן שבה פי’ שיש בה ו’ חוטין של צמר לבן וב’ חוטין של צמר הצבועין בתכלת ואחד מאותן שנים הוא שכורך על הז’ ואין ניכר אלא ביום
- (ירוש’) כיני מתני’ בין תכל’ שבה ללבן שבה מ”ט דרבנן וראיתם אותו מן הסמוך לו ומאי טעמא דר”א וראיתם אותו כדי שיהא ניכר בין הצבעין ותכלת וכרתן שניהן צמר צבוע בשני מינין

English Translation
Tekhel — “[German: hoffen] to hope, trust, or rely.”
“And they who know Your name will trust in You” (Psalms 9:11) is translated by the Targum as: “They will place their hope in You.”
“My flesh shall dwell securely” (Psalms 16:9) is translated as: “It shall dwell in confidence.”
Tekhelet — [purpura / murex-dyed wool]
Berakhot 18: “The tekhelet of Rabbi Yonatan was dragging over the graves.”
Yevamot 4: “Tekhelet is wool. And from where do we know that tekhelet is wool? Since shesh is linen, tekhelet is wool.”
Berakhot 9: It was taught: “Between the tekhelet in it and the white in it.”
Explanation: it has six threads of white wool and two threads of wool dyed with tekhelet, and one of those two is what wraps around the seven. And it is recognizable only by day.
Yerushalmi: Thus is the Mishnah to be understood: “between the tekhelet in it and the white in it.” What is the reason of the Rabbis? “And you shall see it” — meaning, from what is adjacent to it. And what is the reason of Rabbi Eliezer? “And you shall see it” — so that it should be distinguishable between the colors.
And tekhelet and kartan/karti are both wool dyed in two different colors.
Kilayim, chapter 9: We learned: “The priests wear, when serving in the Temple, only wool and linen.” We may infer from this that tekhelet, argaman, and tola‘at shani are all wool, each dyed with these three kinds. This is the explanation of Rabbeinu Chananel, of blessed memory.
Kiddushin 71 / Bereishit Rabbah, parashah 98: “The district of the sea is the tekhelet of Babylonia.”
Explanation: “tekhelet” means: just as tekhelet is the choicest part of a cloak, so this is the choicest of the lands of Babylonia.
Another explanation: the end / outer edge of Babylonia.
