English Translation

From Vol. 8/8:

תְּכֵלֶת
(Assuming: “from Biblical Hebrew; and likewise in Syriac/Aramaic: תַכְלְתָא”)
Purpurblau — purple-blue.

In the Gemara, chapter Mi Shemeto (Berakhot 18a): “the tekhelet of R. Yonatan was dragging over the graves.”[1]

In the Gemara of Yevamot (4b): “Tekhelet is wool”; and the reason that tekhelet is wool is: since shesh is linen, tekhelet is wool.

In the first chapter of Berakhot: “between tekhelet and white” (Berakhot 9b, in the Mishnah). In the Gemara there: it was taught:[2] “between the tekhelet in it and the white in it.” Explanation: there are six threads of white wool and two threads of wool dyed with tekhelet, and one of those two is what is wound around the seven, and it is recognizable only by day.

Yerushalmi (Berakhot 1:2): “Thus is the correct reading of the Mishnah:[3] between the tekhelet in it and the white in it.” What is the reason of the Rabbis? “And you shall see it” (Numbers 15:39) — that is, from what is adjacent to it. And what is the reason of R. Eliezer? “And you shall see it” — so that it should be recognizable among dyed things.[4] And tekhelet and kartan / kartei are both wool dyed in two different kinds/colors.[5]

In the last chapter of Kilayim (m. 1) we learned: “The priests do not wear anything to serve in the Temple except wool and linen.” Learn from this that tekhelet, argaman, and tola‘at shani — all three are wool, and are dyed with these three kinds/colors. This is the explanation of R. Daniel b. R. Yehiel, of blessed memory.[6]

In the Gemara, chapter Yuchasin (Kiddushin 72b), and in Bereishit Rabbah 38, end of parashah 37: “The sea-coast / district — the tekhelet — is in Babylonia.”[7][8] Explanation of tekhelet: just as tekhelet is the finest part of a cloak, so this is the finest of the lands of Babylonia. Another explanation:[9] the end/boundary of Babylonia.

Bracketed Kohut note:

[אחיל”ה] And according to the Rosh — or in Rashi — “the takhilta of Babylonia” means: the crown and glory of Babylonia with regard to lineage. End quote. See the Mattenot Kehunah on the above-mentioned Bereishit Rabbah. This explanation is pleasing and fitting with respect to lineage, which is the subject under discussion there in Kiddushin, and it is not speaking about borders, as according to the first explanation in the Arukh, which takes תכילתא like תכלית, “end” or “limit.” And as Rabbi Dr. Berliner correctly noted in Beiträge, p. 34.

And similarly the forms תכלת / תכילתא occur in Berakhot 9b: “wool of tekhelet”; in Sotah 17a: “They merited a thread of tekhelet … tekhelet resembles the sea,” etc.; Yerushalmi Berakhot 1:3: “This teaches that tekhelet resembles the sea,” etc. See Menachot 43b; Sotah 46b: “Luz, where they dye tekhelet”; and see Menachot 44b, Bava Metzia 61b — see further the entry קלא אילן. Bava Batra 74a: “a horn/measure of tekhelet”; there also: “who casts tekhelet for the righteous.” Sanhedrin 12b — see further the entry זוג. Menachot 39a: “a cloak that is entirely tekhelet”; 42b: “Where did you dye this tekhelet?” etc.; 43b: “the punishment for tekhelet.”

And the Targum translates תכלת — Exodus 28:4; 26:1; 26:31 — as תִכְלָא; and in the Sabionetta edition: תַכְלָא; and so too in Targum Yerushalmi. For פתיל תכלת — “a cord/thread of tekhelet” (Exodus 28:28) — the Targum renders: בחוטא דתכילתא, “with a thread of tekhelet”; in Targum Yerushalmi: בשזיר חוטא דתיכלא, “with a twisted thread of tekhelet.” On Numbers 15:38: חוטא דתכלתא, “a thread of tekhelet”; in Targum Yerushalmi I and II: שזיר דתכלא, “a twisted thread of tekhelet.”

English Footnotes

P1

  1. And so it is in the Munich manuscript of the Talmud, and so too in the Rosh and in the Yalkut. There too the reading is גררא; but in נו״ג the reading is קשריא. I have already discussed these variants at length in the entry דל, section 2; see further in volume 3, p. 64.
  2. And so it is in the Munich manuscript of the Talmud, and in the Rosh, and in the Piskei Rid, and in נו״ג: אלא. But in ב״נ there are two readings: תנא and אלא.
  3. And so it is in the reading of the Maharsham and the Rashba; but in נו״ג the reading is בעי.
  4. The Rosh explained: “between two colors that resemble one another, such as tekhelet and leek-green.” End quote. That is to say: he derives it precisely from “and you shall see it” — that you should see it by itself. For what distinction is there in the thing itself, such that one would need to see and recognize it? Rather, the distinction is between it and a color similar to it. And since the discussion is about two colors that resemble one another, it properly says “and you shall see it,” meaning: to recognize it from the color similar to it. End quote from the Ma‘adanei Yom Tov.
  5. From the words “and tekhelet and kartan,” etc., this is from the explanation of the Arukh. And so too it appears in the Tosafot of R. Yehudah he-Hasid and in the Tosafot ha-Rosh, in the book Berakhah Meshulleshet, who cite the Arukh. And there, in their citation of the Yerushalmi, the reading is: כיני מתניתא, as in the Arukh. And the Maharsham likewise cites the Arukh’s explanation with this variation: “It is speaking of where they place in it three white threads, which are six, and one thread of tekhelet, which is two,” etc.
  6. So it is in ב״י ו״ו ל״ד ה״ב ב״ר, and so too in Ikkerei ha-Talmud; and there it says: “This is the explanation of R. Daniel.” But in manuscript ק״ט and in דפ״ע, it says: “This is the explanation of R. Hananel, of blessed memory.” And know that in the Or Zarua, Laws of Keriat Shema, §13, the explanation of R. Hananel is cited in this language: “R. Hananel, of blessed memory, explained: We established it as referring to when one can distinguish between the tekhelet in the tzitzit and the white in it.” The author of the Or Zarua added: and according to his words, this is implied in chapter Ha-Tekhelet (Menachot 43b), where it was taught: “‘And you shall see it and remember’ — see this mitzvah and remember another mitzvah that depends upon it. And which is that? Keriat Shema,” etc. And this is also proven from the Yerushalmi, which says: כיני מתניחא, etc. Thus, the language of R. Hananel in explaining “between tekhelet and white” is not so lengthy. Therefore, my opinion is that the manuscript reading is the primary one: “This is the explanation of R. Daniel b. R. Yehiel, of blessed memory.” Only, R. Daniel followed R. Hananel’s approach in his explanation. And this is the approach of the Tosafists, and of the Rosh and Rashba, who objected to Rashi’s explanation; see there in the sugya. And the Gri”b, in הפשב״ע, wrote at length to defend Rashi’s explanation; see there.
  7. In Yerushalmi Kiddushin, chapter 4, 65d, in one place it says חבול, and it should read חביל, as appears in the verse.
  8. In נו״ג: דבבל; and in Bereishit Rabbah: תכלתא דבבל — “the tekhelet of Babylonia.”
  9. In the manuscript of the Arukh, the second explanation reads: לי׳.

P2 (for other entries)

  • And it is not as in ט״ד, part I, p. 90, note 2, in חכ״א.
  • And were I not afraid, I would emend it to: תכסיס של סיטומתא שלך — meaning: “the precious value of your seal,” in accordance with the explanation attributed to Rashi in Bereishit Rabbah. See further the entry סטמתא.
  • This is the correct reading in the manuscript, in the first printed edition, and in Ikkerei ha-Talmud. But in שדפ״ע it is a scribal/printing error: in the second chapter of Middot.
