English Translation
Regarding the kesherim and krichos of tzitzis:
Tallis Katan
For a tallis katan, you take the four chutin, put them through one nekav and pull them out through the other nekav, then tie them close to the beged. After that, you make the kesherim and chulyos like we discussed before with the tallis gadol (see tziur 18).
Ha’aros
In “Yesod Veshoresh Ha’avodah,” it brings from the Zohar that all the krichos should be divided into chulyos of 3 krichos each. The seventh krichah of the first set joins with the two krichos of the second set, and so on in this pattern. The same is written in the siddur of the Ria”vatz (Ketzos Hashulchan siman vav, os nun).
The “Sha’ar HaKavanos” (daf ayin amud alef) says: “The gedil should be made chulyah by chulyah, each chulyah consisting of three krichos,” etc.
In “Ra’aya Mehemna” (Zohar chelek gimmel, daf reish chaf tes amud beis), it says: “Each chulyah should be tripled… each triplet is from the side of kedushah,” etc.
In “Tikkunei Zohar” (Tikkun yud, daf lamed gimmel amud alef), it says: “These are the ones who cover me with the mitzvah garment of tzitzis, with five kesharim and thirteen chulyos on each side, and thirty-two strands of the mitzvah. Immediately, Hashem appoints malachim from the upper merkavah to take them on their wings, to fly with them from place to place, and to protect them from all harm and destructive malachim,” end quote.
I also inherited from my uncle, the chossid Reb Yitzchak z”l, the tallis gadol of the holy Rebbe of Trisk, the author of “Magen Avraham.” The tzitzis were made with chulyos in this order: the first gedil had two chulyos of three krichos each, then one chulyah of one krichah. The second gedil had two chulyos of three krichos each, and one chulyah of two krichos. The third gedil had three chulyos of three krichos each, then one chulyah of two krichos, then four chulyos of three krichos each, and finally one chulyah of one krichah.
However, in a letter I received from the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlit”a, dated 4 Elul 5715, he wrote: “Regarding the chulyos of the tzitzis, it’s known that our minhag is to make 3, 3, 1, then 2, 3, 3, etc., to combine the 2 with the 1, as is understood,” etc.
