Alex Clare did not become known because he set out to be a religious role model. He became known because he made serious music, and then held the line when that career collided with religious life.

He grew up in a secular Jewish environment in South London and became Orthodox in his twenties. By the time the music industry started opening doors for him, Shabbos and Yom Tov were already non-negotiable parts of his life.

That became a real test when he was offered the chance to tour with Adele. Clare turned it down because of conflicts with the Jewish calendar. Around that same stretch, he also faced other scheduling demands that ran straight into his observance, and Island Records dropped him. It was the kind of moment that usually forces a person to choose what matters more. Clare chose halacha.

Then came the reversal. “Too Close” was picked up for a Microsoft ad campaign, the song broke through internationally, and his career came roaring back. The success was big. The religious compromise never came.

In 2015, Clare moved to Jerusalem with his family, where he continued building a life centered on both music and Torah. He still performs and records, but on terms that reflect the life he chose rather than the life the industry expected him to choose.
