English Translation
תכלא, תכלא; emphatic form תכלתא: hyacinth blue; something hyacinth-colored. From the emphatic form, it appears that its absolute form is תכלא, of the feminine gender. תכלא וארגונא: “of blue and purple” (Exodus 26:31). רמוני תכלא: “blue pomegranates” (Exodus 39:24). שזור ותכלא: “twisted and blue” (Exodus 26:1). ענובי דתכלא: “blue loops” (Exodus 26:4). בתכלא ובארגונא: “in blue and purple” (Exodus 35:35). בחוטא דתכלא: “with a blue thread” (Exodus 28:28). In the Talmud: תכילתא דכלל; see under כלל. Also: “Why is techeiles different from all other kinds of colors? Because techeiles resembles the sea, and the sea resembles the firmament.” That is: why is the hyacinth color different from all other colors? Because it resembles the sea, and the sea resembles the firmament of heaven, etc. Men. 72b [as printed].
תכילטרין: a kind of garment. In Yalkut on the Law, folio 293, column 2.
Editorial note: The citation “Men. 72b” is retained from the 1875 printing. The quoted comparison of techeiles, sea, and sky appears at Menachos 43b. This entry describes the color and its uses; it does not identify the chilazon.
