Breslov News • A shiur that brought the pages of the Gemara to life in Beit Shemesh: Dozens of Breslover Chassidim in Beit Shemesh saw with their own eyes the words of Chazal and the Rishonim, in a rare hands-on presentation about the “chilazon” and “Tekhelet,” following the approach of the Radzyner Rebbe zt”l and the minhag of Breslover Chassidim from R’ Avraham ben R’ Nachman zt”l until today.
During the week before Purim, unique and unusual shiurim were held in the Birkat HaNachal beis medrash, as part of the daily shiur of HaRav R’ Meir Kirshenbaum shlita, and in the Ohr HaNachal beis medrash in Beit Shemesh, in connection with the Daf Yomi learning of Perek HaTekhelet in Maseches Menachos.
Dozens of Breslover Chassidim and local residents gathered to delve into this fascinating and complex sugya. This time, however, the learning did not remain only on the pages of the Gemara. The sugya was brought onto the table in a tangible, live, and fascinating way.
R’ Shalom Stern shlita, who gave the shiur, surprised the participants by bringing rare marine specimens into the beis medrash: chilazon specimens that had been caught off the coast of Ashdod and carefully preserved in jars of alcohol. These sea creatures, which demonstrate the simanim of the chilazon described in the Gemara and Rishonim, enabled those present to see the sugya “eye to eye.”
The Simanim of the Chilazon
The first part of the shiur was devoted to identifying the simanim of the chilazon. R’ Shalom Stern pointed out each siman mentioned in the sefarim of the Radzyner Rebbe zt”l and demonstrated it on the preserved chilazon itself.
The participants were able to examine up close the “bones and sinews” of the chilazon fish, as well as its famous ink-black blood sac, turning the descriptions of Chazal and the Rishonim into something tangible that could actually be seen and handled.
To complete the picture, photographs were shown of these chilazon fish in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, in the areas of Caesarea and Haifa — precisely the locations where Chazal describe the chilazon as being found. This allowed the participants to see the chilazon in its natural habitat.
“Similar to the Sea”
The question of the exact shade of Tekhelet was also discussed in depth.
R’ Shalom Stern presented an analysis of the spectrum of sunlight in two versions: the historical form of the spectrum as it was known in the time of the Radzyner Rebbe zt”l, using the Fraunhofer lines, and the version commonly used today.
The comparison demonstrated the order and progression of the various colors and shades mentioned in the holy Zohar and other sefarim hakedoshim, and the shades associated with Tekhelet: blue, green, leek-green, a dark or blackish appearance, and others.
Dyeing the Threads: Kala Ilan Versus Tekhelet
The most dramatic part of the shiur was the practical demonstration.
In front of the participants, a live dyeing process was carried out. One thread was dyed with kala ilan — indigo, the blue dye that resembles Tekhelet but is invalid for the mitzvah — while a second thread was dyed with Tekhelet produced from the chilazon.
The process was accompanied by a detailed explanation of the complex chemical fixation process, how the dye bonds to the wool fibers, and the differences between kala ilan and Tekhelet from the chilazon.
The Tests of Rav Yitzchak and Rav Ada
After the dyeing, the participants performed the tests mentioned in the Gemara for distinguishing genuine Tekhelet from a counterfeit dye — the tests for kala ilan.
Using chemical substances that function similarly to those described by Chazal, the participants saw something remarkable with their own eyes.
While the color of the kala ilan thread faded and leached into the solution, the genuine Tekhelet remained in place.
Even later, during the test of Rav Yitzchak, when it appeared that the color of the Tekhelet had weakened and become damaged, the second test — that of Rav Ada — was performed, causing the color to return and strengthen, exactly as described in the Gemara and the Rishonim.
The experiment gave the participants a powerful illustration of the Divine precision found in the words of Chazal, who in their tremendous kedushah were able to provide clear simanim for distinguishing truth from falsehood.
“Toras Emes”
The shiur concluded with a strong feeling of spiritual uplift, together with a deeper and clearer understanding of the words of our holy Chazal and the teachings of the Gedolei Yisrael — the Radzyner Rebbe zt”l and the holy tzaddik R’ Avraham ben R’ Nachman zt”l.
The presentation strengthened those present, particularly in light of the fact that in recent times foreign ideas have entered into this subject, whose roots and source are in the scholars of Greece, rachmana litzlan — as the well-known mashpia HaGaon HaChassid R’ Avraham Yitzchak Karmel zt”l famously cried out.
According to this approach, these ideas have nothing in them from the words of our Rabboseinu Chazal or from the Rishonim, who were like angels.

בשבוע שקדם ליום הפורים הקדוש, התקיימו בבית המדרש “ברכת הנחל” – במסגרת שיעורו היומי של הרה”ג ר’ מאיר קירשנבוים שליט”א. ובבית המדרש “אור הנחל” בבית שמש, שיעורים ייחודים ובלתי שגרתיים במסגרת לימוד הדף היומי ב”פרק התכלת” במסכת מנחות.
עשרות מחסידי ברסלב ותושבי העיר התאספו כדי לצלול לעומקה של סוגיה מרתקת ומורכבת זו. אלא שהפעם הלימוד לא היה רק בדפי הגמרא – הוא עלה על השולחן בצורה מוחשית, חיה ומרתקת.
הר”ר שלום שטרן שליט”א, שמסר את השיעור, הפתיע את הלומדים כשהביא לבית המדרש מוצגים ימיים נדירים: חלזונות שניצודו בחופי אשדוד ושומרו בקפדנות בצנצנות אלכוהול. יצורי ים אלו, הממחישים את סימני החילזון המופיעים בגמרא ובראשונים, אפשרו ללומדים לראות את הסוגיה “עין בעין”.
סימני החילזון
החלק הראשון של השיעור הוקדש לזיהוי סימני החילזון. הר”ר שלום שטרן הצביע על כל סימן המובא בספרי האדמו”ר מראדזין זצ”ל והראה אותו בגוף החילזון המשומר. הלומדים יכלו להתבונן מקרוב ב”עצמות וגידי” דג החילזון ובשקיק דמו השחור כדיו המפורסם, ולהפוך את תיאורי חז”ל ורבותינו הראשונים למציאות שאפשר למשש בידיים.
להשלמת התמונה, הוצגו תמונות של דגי החילזון שצולמו במעמקי הים הגדול, באזורי קיסריה וחיפה – בדיוק במקומות בהם ציינו חז”ל את הימצאות החילזון, דבר שהעניק למשתתפים תמונה מלאה בראותם את החילזון במקום גידולו הטבעי.
“דומה לים”
סוגיית גוון התכלת (בירור המראה המדויק) זכתה אף היא לביאור מעמיק. הר”ר שלום שטרן הציג בפני הציבור ניתוח של ספקטרום השמש בשתי גרסאות: האחת היסטורית, המציגה את קווי האור כפי שהיה מוכר להרה”צ מראדזין זצ”ל (קווי פראונהופר), והשנייה הנהוגה בשימוש בזמנינו. ההשוואה הראתה את סדר והילוך הגוונים והמראות המובאים בזוהר הק’ ובשאר ספה”ק והגוונים השייכים בתכלת: כחול, ירוק, ירוק ככרתי, מראה שחרות ועוד.
צביעת הפתילים: קלא אילן מול תכלת
שיא המתח בשיעור נרשם בחלק המעשי. מול עיני המשתתפים בוצע תהליך צביעה “חי”: חוט אחד נצבע ב”קלא אילן” (אינדיגו) – הצבע הכחול הדומה לתכלת אך פסול למצווה, וחוט שני נצבע בתכלת חילזון. כל זאת תוך הסבר מעמיק של תהליך הקיבוע הכימי המורכב, האופן בו הדיו נתפס בחוט הצמר, וההבדלים בין קלא אילן לתכלת מהחילזון.
בדיקת רב יצחק ובדיקת רב אדא
לאחר הצביעה, ביצעו הלומדים את הבדיקות המובאות בגמרא להבחנה בין הצבע האמיתי למזויף (“בדיקת הקלא אילן”). באמצעות חומרים כימיים הדומים בפעולתם לחומרים המוזכרים בחז”ל, ראו המשתתפים בעיניהם פלא:
בעוד שהצבע בחוט ה”קלא אילן” דהה וירד אל תוך התמיסה, התכלת האמיתית עמדה בעינה. וגם לאחר זמן בבדיקת רב יצחק, כשנראה היה שירד והתקלקל מראה התכלת, נעשתה הבדיקה השנייה – בדיקת רב אדא, והיא גרמה לצבע לחזור ולהתחזק – בדיוק כפי שמתואר בדברי הגמרא והראשונים.
הניסוי המחיש בצורה מצמררת את הדיוק האלוקי בדברי חז”ל, שידעו בקדושתם העצומה לתת סימנים ברורים להבחנה בין אמת לשקר.
“תורת אמת”
השיעור הסתיים בהרגשת התרוממות רוח, תוך הבנה נפלאה ועמוקה בדברי חז”ל הקדושים ודברי גדולי ישראל – האדמו”ר מראדזין זצ”ל והאי חסיד קדוש וטהור ראבר”ן זצ”ל. הדברים חיזקו את הלבבות, בפרט שבעת האחרונה חדרו רוחות זרות בנושא זה אשר שרשם ומקורם מחכמי יון ה”י (וכזעקתו הנודעה של המשפיע הנודע הגה”ח רבי אברהם יצחק כרמל זצ”ל), אשר אין בדבריהם כלום מדברי רבותינו חז”ל ודברי הראשונים כמלאכים זיע”א.
