There are some Yidden who carry the scent of Yerushalayim in everything they do—Rabbi Zundel Kroizer zt”l was one of them. Born in 1924 in the holy alleys of Jerusalem, he wasn’t just a product of the Old Yishuv—he was its embodiment. With the streets of Meah Shearim as his playground and Etz Chaim Yeshiva as his beis medrash, young Zundel soaked up Torah like it was air. His father, Reb Tzvi Hersh, didn’t raise him with frills—just a steady, solid Yiddishe chinuch rooted in mesorah, with a quiet, burning fire for kedushah.

Reb Zundel didn’t just learn Torah—he gave it, lived it, breathed it. You’d find him teaching in local cheders, whether in Meah Shearim or at Belz’s Talmud Torah in Bnei Brak. But his love for Torah and Yidden wasn’t limited to Eretz Yisrael. At one point, he packed up and went to Lugano, Switzerland—yes, Switzerland—to help set up a yeshiva there. Not because it was easy. Because there were Yidden there who needed Torah. That was his whole worldview: if a Yid’s neshama was thirsty, you brought the well to him.

In his later years, Reb Zundel became a quiet anchor at Yeshivas Tchebin. He wasn’t the loudest in the room, but somehow, the room turned toward him. Bochurim, yungerleit—they came with questions, doubts, hashkafa shailos, halacha sugyos. And he answered them. Not with fanfare, just with clarity and warmth. He had that rare mix: approachable, yet deeply respected. The kind of rav you could talk to, and at the same time, never want to waste a word in front of.

Now here’s something not everyone knew: Reb Zundel wore techeiles. Not as a curiosity. Not to make a statement. It was quiet but real. The blue thread hung from his tzitzis like a whisper of the Yam Suf, like a link to the tzaddikim of old. He followed the Rishonim’s shitos and wore it b’tznius, but it meant the world to him. In a world where even big talmidei chachamim hesitate, Reb Zundel did it. Not because it was trendy—it wasn’t—but because he felt it was emes.

When it came to mitzvos, he didn’t cut corners. Ever. Zehirus, kavanah—you saw it in the way he bent for a beracha, how he answered “Amein,” how he washed his hands before a seudah. He didn’t preach; he modeled. Like the Gemara says, Torah tziva lanu Moshe morasha kehillas Yaakov—and to him, every mitzvah was a yerushah, a family treasure that you guard with your life.

Outside the daled amos of learning, he was no less revered. Rabbanim, askanim, balabatim—they all turned to him. Not for noise, but for sense. His advice? Solid. His brachos? Whispered, not shouted—but taken seriously. And his eidelkeit? Let’s just say, if gentleness could be bottled, he had it in gallons.

There’s no need to exaggerate. Reb Zundel didn’t leave behind slogans or flashy accomplishments. What he left was better: Torah, sincerity, and a quiet kedushah that continues to echo. His life wasn’t just about keeping mitzvos—it was about living them, breathing them, letting them guide every word and action.

He was a walking mussar sefer, no question about it. And the glow of his avodah still lights the path for those trying to walk straight in a very zig-zaggy world.
