Yehuda Davis explained that he arrived at his ratio of white to blue strings based on the Mishnah Berurah’s presentation of the view of Rashi and Tosafos. In choosing a tying method, he reviewed the various approaches and found that Rabbi Schachter offered the most compelling analysis of how his method satisfies the opinions of numerous Rishonim. He then consulted his local rabbis, each of whom told him that there is no definitive mesorah regarding how techeiles must be tied and that, technically, he could use whichever method he preferred.
