“Chilzonim” and “Anti-Chilzonim”: A New Look at the Tekhelet Controversy at the End of the Nineteenth Century

‘חלזונים’ ו’אנטי-חלזונים’: מבט חדש על פולמוס התכלת בסוף המאה התשע-עשרה

המאמר בא לבחון את ההיבטים ההיסטוריים-חברתיים של פולמוס התכלת. מתברר שפולמוס זה אמנם החל כשיח הלכתי, אך יצא מן המסגרות של שיח אליטיסטי והגיע אל ‘הרחוב היהודי’, ואף הוביל לסכסוכים יום-יומיים בקהילות באזור לובלין. סכסוכים אלה, שלא נדונו עד כה, מתוארים בעתונות העברית בת הזמן. גם בירושלים התרחשו מאורעות דומים סביב פולמוס התכלת, וגם בהם לא דן המחקר. המקורות הללו מאפשרים לפרש מחדש את ההיבטים ההלכתיים, לשרטט תמונה עשירה ומדויקת של הפולמוס ולהגיע לתובנות חדשות על משמעותו. המחבר טוען שפולמוס התכלת חרג מעבר למחלוקת הלכתית, ולמאבקי השליטה שהיו נפוצים בין הקבוצות החסידיות השונות במאה התשע עשרה. התכלת ביטאה אותנתיות דתית והן חתרנות חברתית אצל מי שחשו עצמם מיעוט בציבור האורתודוכסי. המאמר מנסה ללמוד מהפולמוס גם על סוגיות רחבות יותר בחברה היהודית בסוף המאה התשע עשרה: אופני פעולתה של האורתודוכסיה היהודית, הפוליטיקה החסידית הפנימית ותפקידה של העיתונות היהודית. זאת ועוד, פולמוס התכלת במאה התשע עשרה יכול לסייע בהבנת מניעיו של החיפוש הנרחב אחר התכלת במחצית השנייה של המאה העשרים והפולמוסים שהתחוללו סביבו.

“Chilzonim” and “Anti-Chilzonim”: A New Look at the Tekhelet Controversy at the End of the Nineteenth Century

This article examines the historical and social aspects of the Techeiles controversy. While it started out as a halachic discussion, it quickly moved beyond the rabbinic elite and spilled into the “Jewish street,” even sparking everyday conflicts in communities around Lublin. These disputes, which until now haven’t been studied, were reported at length in the Hebrew press of the time. Similar incidents also took place in Jerusalem, but they too have been largely ignored by scholars.

These sources allow for a fresh interpretation of the halachic issues, painting a richer and more accurate picture of the controversy and leading to new insights about its significance. The author argues that the Techeiles debate went beyond halachic disagreement or the familiar struggles for dominance between different Chassidic groups of the 19th century. For some, Techeiles represented both religious authenticity and a form of social defiance, especially for those who felt themselves to be outsiders within the Orthodox community.

The article also uses the controversy as a lens to explore broader issues in late 19th-century Jewish society: how Orthodoxy functioned, the internal politics of Chassidic circles, and the role played by the Jewish press. Finally, it suggests that the 19th-century Techeiles debate can shed light on the renewed search for Techeiles in the second half of the 20th century and the arguments that surrounded it.
