Rabbi Isaac Herzog’s Techeiles Tallis Stolen by Radzyners

Article reporting on HaRav Herzog’s missing Techelet Tallis in which the Radzyn hasidim are implicated for theft. Please note that this article presents an account that is highly questionable and contradicts everything known about Rabbi Herzog’s stance on Techeiles. Rabbi Herzog’s doctoral thesis, ‘Semitic Porphyrology’ (1913), extensively documents how scientific analysis disproved the cuttlefish dye as an organic source, identifying it instead as synthetic Prussian blue. Furthermore, there is no record of Rabbi Herzog ever wearing a Tallis with Radzyner Techeiles during his lifetime. The claim that only this specific garment went missing, despite the otherwise meticulous safeguarding of his belongings, raises serious doubts about the authenticity of this story. -RH

Mystery with R’ Herzog’s Tallis

by Gedaliah Shtutziner (Tel Aviv)

The tallit (prayer shawl) of the Chief Rabbi, R’ Yitzchak Isaac Herzog, of blessed memory, disappeared the morning right after his funeral. His close associates searched for the tallit of the deceased, but to this day, they have not been able to find it.

The reason for this, it seems, is because Rabbi Herzog, as a researcher of ‘Techeiles,’ came to the conclusion that Rabbi Gershon Henoch Leiner, the Rebbe of Radzin, was correct in introducing the ‘blue tzitzis’ from the ‘Chilazon.’ Rabbi Herzog’s tallit also had these ‘blue tzitzis.’

Efraim Teibenhaus, in his new book B’Netiv HaYachid (p. 230), relates that there was also a great commotion in Safed over the controversy regarding the ‘blue tzitzis.’

In the ranks of the great Polish rabbis, Rabbi Gershon Henoch Leiner occupied a unique place. He published several books in which he demonstrated with proofs that one must wear blue tzitzis made from the ‘Chilazon.’ The entire scholarly world admired the genius of his works: Achot HaKhayim and Sidrei Taharot (a Talmud on the Mishnah’s Order of Taharot).

But he also practically demanded that his Chassidim wear blue tzitzis made from the ‘Chilazon,’ which he had discovered.

Rabbi Herzog wrote in the monthly journal HaHed, under the editorship of R. Binyamin, about ‘Techeiles’ and the ‘Chilazon’ and came to the same conclusion as the Radziner Rebbe. However, he did not have as great an authority as the Radziner Rebbe once had. He was openly afraid of the many opponents in Jerusalem (in fact, all Chassidim, except for the Breslov Chassidim, were opponents of the ‘blue tzitzis’).

The Radziner Chassidim will, in opposition, hold up the tallit as proof that Rabbi Herzog, the greatest researcher of ‘Techeiles’ in the last generation (who dedicated five years to its study), also supported the view of Rabbi Gershon Henoch, the Radziner Rebbe, who had many Chassidim in Israel and around the world.

There is no proof that Rabbi Herzog’s tallit is now in the possession of the Radziner Chassidim. However, no other reason can be found for the mysterious disappearance of the tallit, especially since all of Rabbi Herzog’s garments were consistently under supervision.

It is rumored that the Radziner Chassidim will also publish the studies of Rabbi Herzog regarding ‘Techeiles’ and ‘blue tzitzis,’ which originate from Rabbi Gershon Henoch Leiner.

Teibenhaus in Vag Fun Yachid notes that R. Gershon Henoch of Radzin was the most remarkable. His approach to ‘blue techeiles tzitzis’ stirred the Chassidic and scholarly world, and its echoes are still heard in Jerusalem to this day. Certainly, these echoes are still heard even now in Jerusalem. Certainly, these echoes will be heard even more strongly now, with the mysterious disappearance of Rabbi Herzog’s tallit.
