English Translation
And it should be 1/8 strings should be the string of Techeiles.
Ohr Sameach, Tzitzis 1:6
Our Rebbi’s opinion is that one wool thread should be dyed halfway in Techeiles and then put into the tallis. That way, half the thread is white wool and half is Techeiles. And in his Teshuvah he wrote: “one thread and not two,” and with that one he winds the strings.
What seems like a bit of proof to our Rebbe’s position is from the Yerushalmi, Kilayim, beginning of Perek Tes, which says: We learned two general rules, and the halachos don’t compare to each other. We learned that Kilayim is only with wool and linen, whether dyed or undyed. And we learned that by nega’im, only wool and linen become tamei, and only when undyed. There it says both dyed and undyed… and see further there that it learns out: just like linen is judged in its natural state, so too wool in its natural state. And see Bavli, Bechoros 17, in a similar way, regarding Tzitzis.
At first glance, what’s the problem? We see clearly that the Torah permitted Kilayim in Tzitzis. If you say that dyed threads aren’t subject to Kilayim, then what rejection would there be if someone makes Techeiles in a linen garment? Since the wool changed from its natural state, it should be mutar to combine it with linen. And don’t say that the Torah only permitted making white wool strings for a linen garment, like it says in the beginning that “Techeiles is wool and exempts linen.” That can’t be correct. When did the Torah permit mixing wool and linen? Only when Techeiles was present — since Techeiles pushed aside the issur, the white got pushed aside as well. But if you say Techeiles itself has no Kilayim because it is dyed, then it would not be mutar to put in white wool, since you could just as well put in linen strings for the white. Just like now, for a wool garment, the poskim write it’s assur to put in linen for the white strings, since you can fulfill the mitzvah with wool Techeiles.
From the fact that the Torah explicitly permitted Kilayim in Tzitzis, it proves that Techeiles, even though the wool is dyed, is still considered Kilayim. And in Perek Yud of Hilchos Kilayim, our Rebbe wrote: How do we know all these issurim are from the Torah? Because the Torah needed to permit Kilayim in Tzitzis… and the parsha of Kilayim was placed next to the parsha of Tzitzis only to permit Kilayim in Tzitzis. From this we understand that such a combination not in the place of a mitzvah is assur from the Torah. So too by dyed threads.
Therefore, it makes sense like our Rebbe’s opinion: that one wool thread is used, half dyed in Techeiles. To dye the whole thread Techeiles would not work, because that would come out as two Techeiles threads, and the Torah said “one thread and not two.” And if so, there’s Kilayim here, since half remains white, and that’s Kilayim of white wool in a linen garment. Think into this.
And that’s why it asks: what’s the reason that two Tzitzis are Kilayim? And it’s very correct. You can’t explain that we simply hold that since the Torah permitted Kilayim in Tzitzis, that Kilayim is assur with dyed threads. Rather, the Gemara’s question is: if so, by nega’im too we should say whether white or dyed. But that’s not correct. For by Kilayim, the Torah wrote one pasuk: Beged Kilayim shaatnez lo yaaleh, without saying “wool and linen.” Only we learn from “beged” or from “wearing,” where it says “wool and linen.” Other species are mutar. And since we know from the juxtaposition of Kilayim and Tzitzis that dyed wool is still Kilayim, that’s because the Torah assered it in “beged Kilayim” — even dyed counts as Kilayim.
But by nega’im, we darshen a comparison to linen, and there it’s only undyed. So the kasheh is only if there’d be no need to forbid Kilayim with dyed threads. Then it would be a good kasheh to say: let us learn from the pasuk “lo silbash… wool and linen” that it’s only undyed. Therefore, we’re forced to explain like we said. Think into this well.
