English Translation
The Lashon of Likkutei Torah is not the same as that of Pri Etz Chaim (before the Baal HaTanya, there was no Shaar HaKavanos), because according to the Baal HaTanya, “Techeiles is mochin d’Abba, and white is mochin d’Imma. Therefore, in our times, there is no Techeiles, because due to its high level, it cannot descend during galus” (see the next passage for the words of the Minchas Elazar). But according to the Arizal (Pri Etz Chaim, there, Perek 4), “It is certain that the light of the four tzitzis in mochin d’Chochma d’Imma, which is Binah d’Abba, is prevented from emerging up above, but the matter is not dependent on us.” And also (Perek 5): “It is certain that this upper light of mochin d’Chochma is not prevented from emerging, only that it does not emerge through our actions. But it definitely does emerge…” So it is explicit that the light does come forth from above.
Maybe there is a difference between yotzei (emerging) and yoreid (descending)—meaning, maybe that light emerges from mochin d’Chochma d’Imma but does not descend (if this distinction means anything, and I do not know). If so, there is no contradiction between the Baal HaTanya and the Arizal. However, the Arizal never spoke of yeridah (descending), so all that can be inferred from the Arizal is that there is no Techeiles in our times, but the reason he gives is essentially the same as what the Baal HaTanya said.
The Rebbe Rashab himself referenced these words of the Arizal in the middle of his letter, though he did not compare them to Likkutei Torah. Regarding the distinction between tefillin and tzitzis, that tefillin is chassadim and tzitzis is gevuros, this needs further analysis. Lavan tzitzis is from gevuros d’Imma, while tzitzis with Techeiles is from chassadim (Shaar HaKavanos, Derush 4). But one could differentiate and say that chassadim with the gevurah of Techeiles is more gevurah than the gevuros of eight white strings.
But to the main point, he agrees, as he writes:
“After the Churban, it is impossible to draw down anything higher than Binah d’Imma. Therefore, even when there was Techeiles after the Churban—and possibly since the Churban Bayis Rishon, as mentioned earlier—it certainly did not extend beyond what we have now. Nevertheless, it is impossible to say that because of this, one is exempt from the mitzvah of Techeiles, for surely it is a mitzvah at all times, and if we are able to fulfill it, we must fulfill it.” [38]
Meaning, even if we cannot bring down the light from above through our actions, we are still obligated in the mitzvah.
As for what he writes:
“It is possible that the Tannaim and Amoraim who lived after the Churban themselves were able to bring down the true hamshacha, since they were on the level of Mikdash… and they were certainly on this level.”
It must be that this was for the entire generation, meaning, through them, they brought down this level for the entire generation, enabling them to fulfill the mitzvah of Techeiles. After all, there was Techeiles, as mentioned earlier. And it is not possible to say that the rest of Klal Yisroel was prohibited from wearing it while they themselves wore it (this is not even the kavana of the Rebbe Rashab), rather, everyone in those generations wore Techeiles.
But if so, the next statement is difficult:
“The concern for kilayim (mixing wool and linen) outside of a mitzvah should be enough, especially regarding tallis katan, since many simple people wear garments that are not wool. And if Techeiles were to become something accessible to everyone (which it should be if we consider it an obligation), there is a real concern that this will lead to kilayim. This is exactly like what Chazal said regarding Tekias Shofar: ‘Everyone is obligated in shofar, but not everyone is an expert…’”
If they did not make such a decree in previous generations, why should we now? And since they did not make a gzeirah, it is as if they revealed that there is no need for one.
Rather, it seems that this aligns with what the Baal HaTanya rules in his Shulchan Aruch (Siman 9:2):
“Chazal forbade a linen tallis as a safeguard, lest one also place tzitzis on a nighttime garment and end up wearing kilayim not in the context of a mitzvah. Even tzitzis made of linen is forbidden on a linen tallis as a safeguard, lest one also add Techeiles. Therefore, one should not make a linen tallis at all since it is completely exempt from tzitzis. However, this only applies when Techeiles was available. But in our times, since Techeiles is not commonly available and the concern of adding it to a linen tallis is irrelevant, if one has no alternative, he may place linen tzitzis on a linen tallis…”
So if nowadays people were to start putting on Techeiles again, they might also place it on a linen tallis (which is the reason for the original decree), leading to kilayim violations.
But this concern only applies according to the poskim who allow placing white tzitzis on a linen tallis in our times due to the absence of Techeiles. According to other poskim (see Tur and Beis Yosef, Siman 9; and the Mishnah Berurah, se’if katan 17), who hold that tzitzis should never be placed on a linen garment, or that perhaps white linen tzitzis was always allowed on a linen tallis, this concern would not apply to Techeiles nowadays.
And even more than this: According to the Baal HaMaor (above, p. 7), it is impossible to be exempt from Techeiles without also being exempt from Lavan. However, in our times, it is possible that even according to the Baal HaMaor, there is no reason to prohibit Lavan after Techeiles is no longer available. But if Techeiles were to be found, then the halacha must return to the ruling that a linen garment is completely exempt from tzitzis, because it cannot be that it would be half exempt. Therefore, according to him, there cannot be a situation where one would place Lavan in linen and have to be concerned that he will also place Techeiles in it. However, the opinion of the Baal HaTanya follows Rabeinu Tam, who rules like the Baal HaMaor, but his reasoning is because one might place Techeiles in it. According to him, it is possible to be exempt from Techeiles without being exempt from Lavan.
However, the concern of the Rebbe Rashab was different:
“Nowadays—on the contrary, since all talleisim and tzitzis come from factories that produce them specifically for this purpose, and they do not produce linen talleisim, and all tzitzis strings are wool—therefore, not only is there no concern that one might mistakenly place Techeiles in linen, but even if someone were to make for himself a linen tallis and place wool strings for tzitzis, since only wool strings are available, then it is better if there is Techeiles. Because if he has Techeiles, at least according to several poskim, he will be saved from a d’Oraisa prohibition of kilayim (see Mishnah Berurah, Siman 9, S’if Katan 7). And although in Europe linen garments were widespread, today cotton has replaced linen, and there is no reason to be concerned.”
And regarding ruling halacha based on Kabbalistic derashos, the words of the Tzemach Tzedek in his Chiddushim on Shas (Mikvaos, Perek 1, Mishnah 6) are:
“And the things I wrote are the words of my grandfather, the Gaon, z”l, in his Derush on Alai Be’er Anu Lah. And even though we do not derive halacha from derash, nevertheless, these words are correct and accepted.”
This means that he accepted them not because they are true according to derush, but because the reasoning itself is logically acceptable for halacha [39]. And since this is not the case here, as there is no logical reason to say that Techeiles depends on the existence of the Beis HaMikdash, it is very difficult to shift the halacha to align with the Derush of Chassidus.
As for what was said, that it is impossible that the mitzvah ceased due to its high cost and unavailability—nevertheless, it is possible that due to the gezeirah, it indeed ceased. And it is also hinted at in the Torah, according to the Alshich, the Ohr HaChaim, and the Yeshuos Malko, that the mitzvah of Techeiles would be suspended for a certain period, based on what is written ledorosam. And if this is by Divine decree, who can overturn His will?
And we also brought the words of the Dubno Maggid on this matter:
“If not for the fact that we received the tradition that Lavan does not require Techeiles in our times, we would be searching for it just as we send to distant places to obtain an Esrog, Lulav, and Hadassim.”
However, in Maseches Berachos (53b), it says:
“R’ Yehuda said in the name of Rav: One does not search for fire as one searches for mitzvos.”
And the Rif writes:
“For all mitzvos.”
This implies that one must search for Techeiles as well. However, it seems that due to decrees and the forgetting of the dyeing process (which we know is what actually happened), it was no longer possible to search for it. And one can argue kal v’chomer from the non-Jewish nations, who, unlike us, sat securely in their lands, had the wealth of kings to support them, and had all the technological advancements of their time—and yet, even after a hundred years of forgetfulness, they could not restore royal Techeiles and Argaman until almost 300 years passed (for Argaman), and for Techeiles, more than 350 years. So it is no wonder that Jews were also unable to restore it.
And in truth, we do not know that in the times of the Geonim and Rishonim they did not attempt to restore the mitzvah of Techeiles—just as we do not know that they did. Therefore, it would seem impossible to say definitively that our Rabbanim, zichronam livracha, did not search for it, to the extent that one could draw a halachic conclusion based on that. (And from the words of the Maharil above, p. 15, one can infer that their eyes were always open to identify the chilazon).
As for what was said:
“Regarding Techeiles, one must know with certainty that this is the true Techeiles,”
we will discuss safek Techeiles further on.

36. “Kasav al zeh” – Found in Ohr HaTorah, Parshas Shelach, Dibbur HaMaschil Inyan HaTecheiles, with the completion of the text from there.
37. “Shema yitleno” – Meaning, just like they attribute the reasoning al pi sod for not blowing the shofar to a concern al pi nigleh of “lest one take it,” even though it is a distant concern…
38. In truth, it must be said that since the Torah did not exempt us from this mitzvah just because the Beis HaMikdash is no longer standing, there must be another inyan in fulfilling the mitzvah, even outside the Beis HaMikdash.
39. For the sake of clarity, in order to understand this properly, I will bring the full text here in the footnote. The Baal HaTanya said (Maamarei 5666, p. 269):
“Take for example a well, where the springs flow into it from beneath the ground, for ara’a chalatuli machalchala, and through the Sulma d’Peras, the waters emerge from beneath the ground, rising from below to above. Initially, however, the waters flow from above, as it says: L’matar HaShamayim tishteh mayim (‘from the rain of the heavens you shall drink water’), and it says: V’nahar yotzei me’Eden (‘a river flows from Eden’), etc. Even then, they are still called upper waters. But when afterward, through the Sulma d’Peras, they return and emerge through the thickness of the earth, rising from below to above, they are called mayim chayim (living waters). These are the waters of wells specifically, which are called mayim chayim, because they have passed through the earth, purifying and clarifying, becoming transparent, and thus they are living and sweet. Whereas before passing through the earth from below to above, when they flow into the four rivers from above to below, they are not yet called mayim chayim…
“And based on this, it is understood that the entire purpose of bringing water into the earth is so that they be purified and can be called mayim chayim. So too can the nimshal be understood regarding Klal Yisroel, who are called be’er mayim chayim, but only after the neshamos descend into bodies in this world. For Yisroel arose in the primordial thought—meaning, like the neshamos exist in their root and source, which is comparable to a river that flows from Eden (and this is from the level of mayin d’churin). Then afterward, they descended from above to below through the chain-like order of the worlds, until they enter physical bodies in this world, which is compared to the thick earth, physical inanimate matter. And from there, the neshamos are extracted, rising out from the darkness of this physicality through teshuva (which is the level of mayin nukvin). Then the neshamos are called mayim chayim, because through this, they ascend through the process of purification from below to above. And this is Bayom hahu yetz’u mayim chayim miYerushalayim, chetzio el hayam hakadmoni (‘On that day, living waters will flow from Yerushalayim, half toward the eastern sea’), as it says later.”
And the Tzemach Tzedek discusses there in Chiddushim how much rainwater must flow underground to be considered mei maayan (spring water), and his opinion is that it must clarify and purify due to its underground flow. He discusses at length the halachic sources and concludes with the statement we brought inside the main text:
“And the things I wrote are the words of my grandfather, the Gaon, z”l, in his Derush on Alai Be’er Anu Lah. And even though we do not derive halacha from derash, nevertheless, these words are correct and accepted.”
And even though it is recorded that these words come from his grandfather, z”l, and that they are correct and accepted, he still concludes:
“Nonetheless, regarding a d’Oraisa prohibition, it requires further study to rely on this leniently.”
And he continues that for d’Rabbanan, it is possible to be lenient.
Nevertheless, even statements brought al pi sod are not enough to determine halacha unless they are aligned with the principles of halacha. And where kabbalah determines halacha is only when there is a machlokes in halacha (especially between the Rishonim, where one would not insert oneself into such a debate), in which case kabbalah serves to decide whether to follow one position over the other, or where the reasoning in the pshat of the kabbalistic statement itself serves to determine halacha.
