“And Mordekhai went out from before the king in royal dress, of Techeiles and white wool, and a great gold crown, and a robe of fine linen and Argaman. The city of Shushan reveled and rejoiced” (Esther 8:15).
Rabbi Pinchas says: Mordechai ruled over the Jews.
Just as a king wears porphyrin wool — wool dyed from the purphira/murex — so too Mordechai wore porphyrin wool.
Just as a king wears a crown set upon his head, so too Mordechai wore “a great golden crown.”
Just as the fear of a king is upon the whole land, so too Mordechai’s fear was upon them, as it says, “For the fear of Mordechai had fallen upon them” (Esther 9:3).
Just as a king’s coinage circulates throughout the whole land, so too Mordechai’s coinage circulated.
And what was his coinage? Mordechai on one side, and Esther on the other.
Why? Because he was a good man, a man of peace, and one who sought peace, as it says, “For Mordechai the Jew…” (Esther 10:3). And about him the pasuk says, “Guard the wholesome man and see the upright, for the end of such a man is peace” (Tehillim 37:37).

“Mordechai ruled.” This is difficult. What kind of kingship did Mordechai have over the Jews? It cannot mean that the Jews became a separate nation under him and left the rule of Achashverosh.
Rather, the meaning seems to be that Mordechai remained strong in his Yiddishkeit and Torah even after he became known to the government.
Since the kingship of the Jews is their attachment to Hashem’s Torah and avodah — along the lines of “a kingdom of kohanim” (Shemos 19:6), and Chazal’s statement, “Who are kings? The Rabbanan” (Gittin 62a) — therefore the Midrash says that Mordechai ruled over the Jews. Meaning, he was the head of the pious Jews.
This is like Chazal say: just as mor is the chief of all spices, so too Mordechai was the chief of all the tzaddikim of his generation. The derashah is playing on mor / Mordechai.
“So too Mordechai, his coinage circulated in all the provinces.” The text in Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer and Yalkut Shimoni Esther 1059 reads: “And what was his coinage? Mordechai on one side and Esther on the other.”
This means that the name Mordechai was written on one side and the name Esther was written on the other side. It does not mean, chas v’shalom, that their actual images were on the coin.
But in Bereishis Rabbah 39:11, it says differently: sackcloth and ashes on one side, and a golden crown on the other.

“Rabbi Pinchas says: Mordechai ruled…” This is from Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer, chapter 50.
“And what was his coinage…” This is from Bereishis Rabbah, parashah 39, and see there.
The correct text should read: “Why? Because he was a good man, sought good, and was a man of peace.”
“A good man” refers to what the pasuk says, “accepted by most of his brothers” (Esther 10:3), meaning his heart was good toward everyone.
“Sought good” refers to what the pasuk says, “seeking good for his people” (Esther 10:3).
“A man of peace” refers to what the pasuk says, “speaking peace to all his seed” (Esther 10:3).
And about him the pasuk says, “For the end of such a man is peace” (Tehillim 37:37).
The pesukim before it there fit well with Haman and his sons: “The wicked watches the righteous…” (Tehillim 37:32), “I saw a wicked man powerful…” (Tehillim 37:35), “He passed, and behold, he was gone…” (Tehillim 37:36). And the pesukim afterward also fit them: “Transgressors were destroyed together…” (Tehillim 37:38).
Therefore, “the end of such a man is peace” is darshened on Mordechai, as it says about him, “speaking peace to all his seed.” His end was good, with a good future and hope.

“Mordechai ruled over the Jews.” This means that he was strong in his Yiddishkeit and was the head of the pious Jews.
As Chazal say in the first perek of Megillah: just as mor is the chief of all spices, so too Mordechai was the chief of all the tzaddikim in his generation. The derashah is playing on mor / Mordechai.
It cannot mean that he literally became king, because the Jews did not leave Achashverosh’s rule at that time.
Rather, it means he was crowned with the crown of Torah and yiras Hashem.
Now, someone who carries the crown of Torah needs four qualities.
First, he must be clean in his middos and above suspicion, so that no chillul Hashem should come through him. That is why the Midrash says Mordechai wore clean porphyrin wool like the king. Meaning, he was honored with proper middos, which are called a person’s garment and clothing. This is like Chazal darshen on the pasuk, “At all times your garments should be white” (Koheles 9:8), and like the pasuk says, “I wore righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and turban” (Iyov 29:14).
Second, he must be full of mitzvos like a pomegranate, because the main thing is not the learning alone, but the action, as Chazal say, “Not the study is the main thing, but the deed” (Avos 1:17). Corresponding to this, the Midrash says he wore a crown like the king. Meaning, his deeds were many and beautiful. As Chazal say, “Your crown is greater than their crown” (Avos 6:5), and “tzaddikim sit with their crowns on their heads” (Berachos 17a). The deeds are the golden crown on the head of the one who does them.
Third, he must be careful with his own kavod and not become degraded in the eyes of the people. Rather, his presence should carry weight among others. Corresponding to this, the Midrash says Mordechai’s fear was upon them.
Fourth, he must be wholesome and complete, and he must do good and chesed with many people, so that his name goes out in the land. Also, his Torah should spread throughout the land. Corresponding to this, the Midrash says Mordechai’s coinage circulated, meaning everyone heard his Torah and everyone saw his chesed.
“So too Mordechai, his coinage circulated in all the provinces, as it says, ‘and his name went out.’ And what was his coinage? Mordechai on one side and Esther on the other.”
This is the text in Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer.
The meaning is that the name Mordechai and the name Esther were written on the two sides of the coin. It does not mean their actual images were there.
