משקר [געשפאלטען] (ע”ז כח) ואי לא נייתי משקרי חזלוני נחות פי’ צפרדעין שהן נסדקין וצפרדע יוצא מהן (א”ב חלזוני אינם צפרדעי’ כי אם שקץ המים הנשמר בקליפות קשות כמו לולי’ שביבשה):
English Translation
משקר — “[split/opened]” (geshpalten).
(Avodah Zarah 28a): “And if not, let him bring split-open chalzonim…”
The Aruch explains: “Meaning: tzfardain (frog-like creatures) which are split open, and a frog comes out of them.”
The Musaf HeAruch adds:“Chalzonim are not frog-like creatures. Rather, they are aquatic creeping creatures which are protected by hard shells, like [the corresponding creature] on land.”
