Once Techeiles got lost, we can’t revive it

Quick Facts
Categories: Mesorah

Rav Herzog zt”l… speculated that persecution by anti-Semitic governments ended the production of techeiles. Still another possibility is that the knowledge how to produce the techeiles was lost, or that there was no longer availability or access to the chilazon, the source of the techeiles…

The Beis Halevi took issue with the Radziner on the basis of mesorah, but there is a dispute as to exactly what was his objection. The way the Radziner quotes the Beis Halevi, his concern was that the species identified by the Radziner was well-known, and, if it indeed was the correct source, this mesorah should not have been lost…

When Eliyahu Hanavi returns as the precursor to the mashiach, he will identify for us the mesorah he received from his rabbei’im and thereby we will be able to identify the proper techeiles.

Lost all kinds of Mesorah

Rafi Hecht
Item 2

There are a lot of Mesorah’s that are new, broken, or mistaken, including:

The exact text of the Torah. As of Aharon Ben Asher’s time (https://www.mywesternwall.net/2012/07/09/letters-in-the-torah-ben-asher-version-which-one-is-right.html), there were many varations of Chaser and Yeter, making the variances between all Sifrei Torah only 99.99% accurate (and not 100%). Even today, there are minor variances between the Sifrei Torah of Ashkenaz, Sefard, Yemenite and Chabad!

Shabbos. There was a time prior to WW2 where many different Jewish groups in different communities in Europe started and ended Shabbos. It was only after the war when the times became standardized.

Tefillin. In terms of Mesorah, Tzitzis and Tefillin were neglected, both in part due to the fact that they were outwardly-showing mitzvos (https://repository.yu.edu/items/4b199896-5390-4b20-9aa5-c413eb2e265f). Restoring Tefillin was met with intense pushback just like Techeiles today (https://www.jewishpress.com/judaism/torah/what-the-loss-of-tefillin-can-teach-us-about-techeiles-today/2025/06/19/).

Also of note are Esrogim, Tefillin, Turkey, and more.

Negative Mesorah

Item 3

The version of the Radzyner Rebbe was that the Beis HaLevi wrote that it was from a negative mesorah, since the cuttlefish was so common and Jews chose not to use it. The same cannot apply to the murex trunculus, of whose dying died out hundreds of years ago.
