Levush HaAron
Item 1

First of all, as we already have shown, a חלזון is a snail. As such it is obvious that regardless of which חלזון was used for תכלת , it must be non-kosher – since all snails are not kosher. We are only left to explain why this is not an issue.

The discussion in the above Gemara is regarding תפילין . Although some Rishonim are of the opinion that also for other Mitzvos kosher products must be used, since the חלזון is used only as a source of color, it is not considered to be intrinsically present in the strand of 199 ציצית .

This idea can also be proven from the fact that ארגמן and תולעת שני were derived from non-kosher creatures as well 200, see page 95.

The Gemara’s principle of “muttar be-fikha” applies only to items eaten, not ritual dyes. Many mitzvos (shofar, parchment, ink) use non-kosher materials, so snail dye is valid.

Item 3

So the Noda B’Yehuda asks, what about Techeiles, since it’s from a Chilazon which is a Sheretz? R’ Shmuel Landau proves his father’s point, that it’s just color. Rabbeinu Bachya discusses making the Bigdei Kehuna from silk (which isn’t kosher). But Techeiles needs to be on wool from a kosher creature, of which is muttar beAchila.
